"The Dunham Difference: Empowerment”
Detroit Legacy Project and the PG Institute present: "The Dunham Difference: Empowerment” July 14-21, 2007 Social issue: Domestic Violence 06.21.07 Contact: Perryne Thompson 313.835.8188 Stephen Brooks: 313.867.7707 The Detroit Legacy Project in cooperation with the PG Institute presents: "The Dunham Difference": Empowerment--An 8-day celebration of the arts, July 14-21, 2007. As part of the festivities, there will be the sharing of important information about the social issue of Domestic Violence.
Various sponsors have generously offered venues throughout the Detroit area. There will be presentations in dance and related art forms, and include master classes, lectures, roundtable discussions, films, lecture/demonstrations, etc.
Honorary Chair for this year’s activities is Reverend Jeremiah Wright, prominent, Senior Pastor of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ. Last Year, Honorary Chair was Sam Logan--owner of the prestigious Michigan Chronicle. Beginning July 14, each venue will have as a component a cultural activity involving the arts, a speaker on the issue of Domestic Violence, and a presentation about Katherine Dunham's legacy. We are gathering literature that we can freely hand out to intergenerational audiences. THE ENTIRE FAMILY IS WELCOME, and programming will be appropriate to all ages. With the exception of a nominal fee for Master Classes, all other events are completely free and open to audiences of all ages.
Various arts and dance groups will participate in each day’s activities. Included are a variety of dance groups, as well as special choreographic presentations and Master Classes by Michigan’s only certified teacher in the Dunham Technique—Penny Godboldo. Internationally renowned Master Teacher Monsoir Louines Louinis will teach authentic Afro Haitian classes, open to all for a wonderful cultural experience. There are commitments from Reverend Lisa Mayowa Reynolds, Chair of Dance at Detroit High School for the Fine Arts, Deacon Bridget McDonald, Director of the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church Dance Ministry, and Judy Milner of Perfecting Church Dance Ministry. The Amen Ra Drummers and Dancers, spoken word artists, Pitch Black Poets and others round out the programming.
Katherine Dunham, world renowned anthropologist, choreographer and social activist, was featured in an article in the May '07 issue of Trumpet magazine (an international publication geared to the socially conscious), in which a member of the Detroit Legacy Project was interviewed. The last paragraph of the article cites the City of Detroit and Hartford Baptist Church’s pastor, Charles G. Adams among the first to endorse the Legacy Project’s Call to Action. We are grateful to Councilwoman Joann Watson for her continued support. We are certain that those who support this effort will become known as Legacy-Keepers.
