Wanna Be an Artist? Move to Detroit!

Detroit’s First Affordable Housing Development for Artists
The Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit is now accepting applications for the Whitdell Apartment building. This is the first affordable housing development in Detroit specifically design for artists. This unique opportunity is a result of the collaborative efforts of Southwest Solutions (the non profit building developer) and CAID. The 1920’s era 32 unit apartment building has been completely refurbished and will include 1, 2 and 3 bedroom units along with a new state of the art gallery and educational studios operated by CAID. Why live anywhere else? Make your home in a creative environment where the rent is affordable and your neighbors are creative and actively involved in Detroit’s cultural community. Musicians, painters, poets, sculptors, fashion designers and other creative individuals are encouraged to apply. Please contact CAID for application details.
With so many new $200K and higher condominiums going in where artists once thrived, the Whitdell Building offers a safe and permanent space for artists with no threat of gentrification. Consider the impact this new housing project has on not only the artists but the cultural integrity of Detroit as well. Don’t miss out! Apply today. Move in dates start in October 2007. The new gallery in the Whitdell Building:
This 1200 sq ft gallery will be housed in the 32 unit apartment building thoughtfully designed as affordable housing for artists. The work of local and international artists will be featured in this completely new state of the art gallery. Artists residing in the building will have an opportunity to have their work considered for exhibition. The gallery and educational studios intend to serve as a model for other apartment building developments in the Detroit area and abroad. "The Dunham Difference: Empowerment”

Detroit Legacy Project and the PG Institute present: "The Dunham Difference: Empowerment” July 14-21, 2007 Social issue: Domestic Violence 06.21.07 Contact: Perryne Thompson 313.835.8188 Stephen Brooks: 313.867.7707 The Detroit Legacy Project in cooperation with the PG Institute presents: "The Dunham Difference": Empowerment--An 8-day celebration of the arts, July 14-21, 2007. As part of the festivities, there will be the sharing of important information about the social issue of Domestic Violence.
Various sponsors have generously offered venues throughout the Detroit area. There will be presentations in dance and related art forms, and include master classes, lectures, roundtable discussions, films, lecture/demonstrations, etc.
Honorary Chair for this year’s activities is Reverend Jeremiah Wright, prominent, Senior Pastor of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ. Last Year, Honorary Chair was Sam Logan--owner of the prestigious Michigan Chronicle. Beginning July 14, each venue will have as a component a cultural activity involving the arts, a speaker on the issue of Domestic Violence, and a presentation about Katherine Dunham's legacy. We are gathering literature that we can freely hand out to intergenerational audiences. THE ENTIRE FAMILY IS WELCOME, and programming will be appropriate to all ages. With the exception of a nominal fee for Master Classes, all other events are completely free and open to audiences of all ages.
Various arts and dance groups will participate in each day’s activities. Included are a variety of dance groups, as well as special choreographic presentations and Master Classes by Michigan’s only certified teacher in the Dunham Technique—Penny Godboldo. Internationally renowned Master Teacher Monsoir Louines Louinis will teach authentic Afro Haitian classes, open to all for a wonderful cultural experience. There are commitments from Reverend Lisa Mayowa Reynolds, Chair of Dance at Detroit High School for the Fine Arts, Deacon Bridget McDonald, Director of the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church Dance Ministry, and Judy Milner of Perfecting Church Dance Ministry. The Amen Ra Drummers and Dancers, spoken word artists, Pitch Black Poets and others round out the programming.
Katherine Dunham, world renowned anthropologist, choreographer and social activist, was featured in an article in the May '07 issue of Trumpet magazine (an international publication geared to the socially conscious), in which a member of the Detroit Legacy Project was interviewed. The last paragraph of the article cites the City of Detroit and Hartford Baptist Church’s pastor, Charles G. Adams among the first to endorse the Legacy Project’s Call to Action. We are grateful to Councilwoman Joann Watson for her continued support. We are certain that those who support this effort will become known as Legacy-Keepers. To read a copy of the article, and other documents of endorsement, please go to Detroit Blogspot cited below.
