Let My People Go! A Spiritual Journey Along the Underground Railroad

Categories: Choral Groups, Opera & Musicals, History/Science/Life

The story of escaped slaves risking their lives for freedom comes to life through music, dance and storytelling in Donald McCullough’s "Let My People Go! A Spiritual Journey Along the Underground Railroad." The work explores the coded language hidden within the spirituals that helped slaves escape.

The performances are presented by the Rackham Symphony Choir, Suzanne Mallare Acton, conductor, with the Marygrove College Chorale and the Hartford Memorial Bach Choir. The collaboration brings suburban and urban participants together to celebrate the lives and struggles of the heroes of the Underground Railroad.

Featured soloists are Alaina Brown, soprano, Leah Dexter, mezzo, Anthony P. McGlaun, tenor, and David Vaughn, bass. The dramatic presentation features narration by Madelyn Porter and Council Cargle, African Drums, and the Marygrove College Dance Company with choreography by Penny Godboldo. Theatrical direction is by Madelyn Porter.

Performance times:

* Friday, Feb. 29 at 7 p.m.
* Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $25 general admission; $10 for students; $50 for patrons. Patrons are invited to a reception with artists following the Friday performance. Call (313) 404-0222 or visit www.rackhamchoir.org.
