Our dear friend Ms. Carol Chea joined the ancestors on Friday, May 6th. Carol was a VERY active and integral member of the African and African-American Community in Detroit. She loved to dance and could often be seen going across the floor during the Wednesday night class at PGI. Please join the Detroit community as we celebrate her life.

Her funeral is May 21 11am at the Historic Little Rock Baptist Church, Swanson is handling the Visitation; W. McNichols location on Friday prior 4-8p.

Keith Tyrone Williams is a native of East St. Louis, Illinois and currently teaches in the St. Louis Public School System and adjunct professor at Washington University. Keith has an extensive background in the cultural and performing arts. He has performed, directed and choreographed throughout the United States and extensively in Europe. Most recently, Keith appeared in “The Full Monty” at Stages St. Louis for which he won the prestigious Kevin Kline Award. His most recent choreographic work, “Sarafina”, a musical about South African Aparthied, received rave reviews and garnered Keith his second Kevin Kline Award for best choreography. Of his proudest achievements is being the recipient of the NAACP Cultural Arts Award for his contribution to cultural arts and his mentorship of young African American
Artists. His work as a director/choreographer/performer has been seen at Arena Stage, Amas Repertory, Cape Fear Regional Theater, Gem Theater, Powell Symphony Hall, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, Los Angeles Playhouse, the St. Louis Black Repertory Company & the Muny Theater (St. Louis). Keith has been a master teacher at Philadanco, International Association of Blacks in Dance, Lula Washington, and universities nationally and internationally. His Broadway, national, and international credits include Once On This Island, Legs Diamond ,Five Guys Named Moe (LA Ovation and NAACP nomination, The Music of Andrew Lloyd Weber/Royal Command Performance, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Starlight Express, and Katherine Dunham Gala at Carnegie Hall.
Keith is very proud to be among the few people certified by Katherine Dunham to teach the world renowned Dunham Technique, and served as co-writer and appeared in the historic documentary on Dunham Technique with the Library of Congress. Keith is
Artistic Director of Innervision Dance Theatre and holds a BS, MA, and MFA/Directing with an emphasis in Arts Management and has particular interests to incorporate cultural arts into academic curriculums to enrich, inspire, and elevate the minds of youth diverse backgrounds.

Funeral arrangements for Holocaust survivor Frank Kussy are as follows:
Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home, 23720 Farmington Road, Farmington. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Fatima, 13500 Oak Park Blvd., Oak Park.

Kussy and his wife set up a scholarship at Michigan State University. Donations to the Frank and Adelaide Kussy Memorial Scholarship for the Study of the Holocaust can be sent by check to University Advancement, Michigan State University, 300 Spartan Way, East Lansing, MI 48824-1005. L'Amour Ameer
is a former dancer of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, under the direction of Jeraldyne Blunden. He danced four and one half years with them and one year with SMAG Dance Collective under the direction of Michael Grooms (another DCDC dancer). He has been trained in Modern, Jazz, Horton, Graham, Ballet, Latin and African dance. Sulley Imoro began learning African drumming and dance from his father when he was 8 years old. His father, also a popular dancer, was known throughout Ghana. Sulley was eager to follow in his father’s footsteps. “Anytime in the village when we didn’t have entertainment, Father would bring the drums out and play,” he said. “Sometimes we didn’t have light in the village, and if the moon was bright, we would come together and play and dance.” Since that time, Sulley has become a renown performer and teacher of traditional Dagomba drum, dance and song.
Currently, Sulley (pronounced "soo'-lay") is the director and founder of the Mbangba Cultural Troupe of Ashemie, and is an instructor for the dance ensemble at the University of Ghana at Legon. He has also served as a dance instructor for the Dagara Music and Arts Center in Medie, Ghana. In addition, for more than 20 years Sulley has taught African drumming and dance
classes in Ghana and at American colleges, and has performed throughout Africa, Europe, and the United States. In Ghana, whenever there is a high-profile visitor, the Ambassador calls Imoro and his ensemble to dance in front of crowds that can reach into the thousands.

Frederic Leon, straight from Haiti, was our guest artist two summers ago. Ever since the devastating Earthquakes in Haiti last month - we have been trying to find out his condition and whereabouts.

Finally - news came today from his aunt who lives on the East Coast. He is alive and well. His home collpased and he and his daughter barely made it out alive. He is living in an area outside of Port au Prince, until he is able to move back to a proper home.

This is very good news. We are very happy to hear the Frederic and his daughter are safe in Haiti.

Good Evening, All:
It is with great sadness that we learned late last night of the devastation in Haiti from a massive earthquake at 7.0 on the richter scale. In addition, there were 11 or 12 aftershocks. Our prayers go out to our Haitian brothers and sisters.

My Haitian friends have told me that there will be a meeting tonight (Wednesday, January 13, 2010) at 6pm to discuss ways in which we can provide some immediate relief. So, I am sure that by tomorrow we will be posting updated information.

IN THE MEANTIME, PLEASE BEGIN GATHERING ANY ITEMS OF CLOTHING YOU CAN SPARE TO DONATE. THEY WILL NEED EVERYTHING. Food, Fresh Water, Medical supplies, Clothing and cash to purchase other needed items that are of most immediate concern. There is no shelter and most of the Port au Prince area has been completely flattened, as has Petionville and other surrounding area.

MANY GROUPS ARE MOBILIZING TO HELP, BUT WE WILL WANT TO BE SURE THAT OUR DONATIONS GO TO A REPUTABLE DISTRIBUTION SOURCE.

I have spoken with Geraud Dimanche, and he knows that some of his family is safe, though he has not been able to make contact with all of them.

BIOGRAPHY

Keith is the proud recipient of the Katherine Dunham Dance Award. He has co-starred with Billy Daniels and has worked with Melba Moore, Ruby Dee,. Diana Ross, Vivian Reed, Willam Warfield, Avon Long, Archie Savage, and the vivacious talents of Eartha Kitt and Tina Turner. He has had the honor and privilege to work with directors and choreographers such as Ossie Davis, Gracielle Danielle, Henry Le Tang, Bob Fosse and his mentor Katherine Dunham.

It's too cold outside Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..... And we really can't keep Compas warm today. So - classes are cancelled for today.

So - Enjoy your weekend, Have a Fabulous MLK day on Monday (which doubles as the NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE this year) - AND get out and do something for others. Watch the Inauguration of our 44th President - Barack H. Obama on Tuesday. We're headed there to witness it - let me know if you'll also be in attendance.

Wednesday class at Considine is also cancelled - because I will still be in DC!!! Go Barack!

So - enjoy the fabulous days ahead - full of reflection, service and change.
