ITS NOT OVER!!!!
The Detroit Dunham Legacy Project would like to thank everyone who helped to make the Katherine Dunham Memorial Tribute a huge success. July 28, 2006 will forever mark the day that DETROIT celebrated the Life and Legacy of the late Ms. Katherine Dunham. Now that the Tribute is over the work MUST continue. The Detroit Dunham Legacy Project has pledged to continue the work that Ms. Dunham has begun. Dunham WILL be a household name. As Miss Dunham would say, "Dunham is a Way of Life." Please check back often for updates.

DETROIT – Katherine Dunham, an internationally renowned pioneer of modern dance, culture and human rights made her final transition May 21, 2006 at age 96 in New York City. In honor of the late Ms. Dunham, /Certified Dunham Technique instructor Penny Godboldo presents a national memorial and celebratory performance and tribute: The Dunham Legacy. Date: Friday, July 28, 2006 at 6:00 p.m.; Location: Fellowship Chapel, 7707 W. Outer Drive, Detroit, MI, 48235, Pastor is Wendell Anthony.
An icon and national treasure, Dunham has left a deep imprint on thousands of people around the world, leaving behind her legacy –the Katherine Dunham Technique – an approach to dance that she defined as a way of life. Proceeds of the performance will benefit a Dunham Conference in Detroit, 2007 and ensure the continuation of the Dunham Technique as it will be broadly shared with current and future generations.
Dunham is recognized as the founder of the first African American Modern Dance Company, which she achieved in the 1930s. Her troupe traveled around the United States and 257 countries sharing modern, afro-Haitian, and afro-Caribbean dance. The Katherine Dunham troupe also performed in the film Story Weather (1943) starring Lena Horne, which served as another milestone for Dunham who first brought African dance to film. For decades Miss Dunham has continued to share her technique – which combines traditional modern, classical ballet, and various traditional dance forms of the African Diaspora, influencing the work of Alvin Ailey, Marlon Brando, and Earth Kitt. Ms. Dunham won numerous awards for her work as an anthropologist and civil and human rights activist, including a 1992 47 day hunger strike for the controversial policy on Haitian Refugees.
Dunham devoted her life to service, drawing from her monumental strides in the art world to help underprivileged communities. Dunham certified a hand full of instructors to pass on her technique and philosophy including Michigan’s only certified teacher of the Dunham Technique, Detroiter Penny Godboldo and memorial organizer.
The national memorial tribute will serve as a spectacular celebration of a dynamic legacy of her life and SPIRIT, her commitment to family and friends, and her international contingent of teachers and students. Through Ms. Dunham’s living vision, she will continue to motivate and teach youth in the international communities and villages around the world. Join us in a loving tribute in honor of one of Oprah Winfrey’s recognized LEGENDS.
